Sunday, June 24, 2001

The day began with the running of the Sprint finals. No big surprise – South Carolina won, turning in their best sprint time yet.

The Endurance heats each began with a parade lap which took the boats under two bridges, in front of the Buffalo Historical Museum, and past the Japanese gardens. The day was mostly sunny and warm, and quite a few spectators were on hand for the afternoon finals. The competition was very close, with Marquette passing rookie team Rice with less than 10 minutes remaining in the two hour event to capture the Endurance championship.

Saturday, June 23, 2001

Sprints were delayed until 1 pm because of morning rain. Once the rain cleared, Hoyt Lake was smooth and winds were calm for an afternoon of sprints. After several heats the three finalists were determined: South Carolina, Coast Guard, and SUNY – Stony Brook. The finals will be held at 8:30 in the morning immediately following the skippers’ meeting.

The Endurance event will be held tomorrow, beginning shortly after the Sprint finals are completed.

Friday, June 22, 2001

Morning rain delayed the completion of Qualifying and Slalom for about an hour. Fifteen teams qualified for the Endurance event, and sixteen teams qualified for the Sprint event.

The first round of Sprint heats began in the afternoon. In the first heat, the UMBC entry capsized. The skipper and the boat were both rescued, and the competition continued.

Thursday, June 21, 2001

Today’s event began at 8 am with the daily skippers’ meeting. Electrical, mechanical, and on-the-water inspections were completed by the end of the day. Television, radio, and newspaper reporters were on hand for much of the day.

Several teams completed qualification in both sprint and maneuverability, and some also ran the slalom course. Qualifying and slalom events will continue through noon tomorrow, with the first round of the sprint events beginning in the afternoon.

Wednesday, June 20, 2001

The event began at 8 am with teams arriving to register. Electrical, mechanical, and on-the-water inspections began, and several teams completed all three inspections. Television crews from local Buffalo stations were on hand to catch some of the action. Skippers participated in the swim test in the afternoon.

The day ended with the annual mixer, which was hosted by the Buffalo Yacht Club as the sun set over Lake Erie. Team members and local volunteers enjoyed a fun, relaxing evening which included a knot-tying challenge. Awards were given for the best technical reports.

Qualifying will begin tomorrow at Hoyt Lake after the 8 am skippers’ meeting.
