The SOLAR SPLASH scoring system has evolved over the years as have the Rules of the Event. In the event’s inaugural year (1994), there was a Sprint Event and an Endurance Event, but no overall point system. The current 1000 point system was adopted in 1996, and the allocation of those points among the various events has changed over the years.
The Sprint Event began as a 200-meter-long event with a 24V battery limit. The present Sprint Event is 300 meters long, and a 36V supply can be used. The Endurance Event has been a two-hour event since its inception. The Slalom event was added in 1999 to challenge the competitors. Qualifying was removed from the Event in 2024 to give teams more free time on the water.
